And so it begins…

I have to say, as a library student two weeks from graduation, I’m excited. Yes, budgets are tight, and jobs are a little scarce, but I am really excited about the possibilities. Libraries are and should be the heart of the community, and we should all recognize them as such. Babies come in and sit on their mothers’ laps for their first taste of stories and songs. They get older and come in for crafts and book clubs. Even older, they come to us for homework help and research, and as adults, we give them access to career resources and computer classes. I’ve said before that libraries are uniquely situated to help every person of every age, of every race, of every walk of life. We have no prejudice, we do not discriminate. Where else provides that same kind of equality? Sure, libraries have their flaws, but that’s why there are hundreds of dedicated individuals looking to do everything they can to meet the needs of their community.

I’m excited, and it’s going to be my job – my mission – to pass that excitement on.
